There is much to see and wonder about in the Nizhny Novgorod region. One of the most interesting constructions is the lacy Shukhov tower made of steel 128 m high, built in 1929 on the left bank of the Oka near the city of Dzerzhinsk as a power line support. Despite its utilitarian purpose, this tower is a bright and original monument of Russian avant-garde architecture.
In 1927-1929. Three pairs of such multi-layered mesh towers were erected here to transfer high-voltage transmission lines through the Oka.
In 1997, the 160-ton tower was declared a monument of cultural significance, and engineering and industrial architecture, protected by the state. Western experts highly appreciated it and recommended it to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List
Shukhov Tower on the Oka consists of five sections in the form of one-sheeted hyperboloid rotation and does not have curved parts. The sections are made up of straight profiles with straight beams, which form a special lattice, reinforced with steel round holders. Wind load, dangerous for high-altitude structures, in this case is minimal, which gives the structure strength. In addition, the design also has a curious "optical effect": standing very close to the tower and looking upwards it seems that it is bending.
Near this impressive tower there are always crowds of people, despite the remoteness of its location. Numerous tourists with pleasure visit it, making bundles of photos for memory.
In general, if you have a little time during your trip in the Nizhny Novgorod region - look into this corner. You will not regret!
