The paragraph of history
For the years of its existence the monastery was not once ruined - at first it was the army of False Dmitry II, and later - the French interventionists, despite the thick walls - first wooden, and then stone . The length of the walls was 673 meters, and the fence itself was reinforced with six towers (albeit without guns), so it is not surprising that the enemies from the west sought to take possession of the fortress- monastery as soon as possible Rey . And during the siege of the fortress False Dmitry, the walls were too tough for the storm and they managed to take the monastery only because the bribed traitor opened the gates of the fortress to the enemies .
However, sometimes the fortress became a prison. In particular, here two times exiled Archpriest Avvakum, who disliked the authorities, who, with bitter irony, called Borovsk "my fatherland", "a place tormented ..." in his works.
In addition, Borovsk itself was shrouded in gloomy fame in connection with the eradication of the Old Believers . It was in the city prison that the very boyar Morozova was imprisoned, which each of us in school le saw in Vasily Surikov's painting . Brutal torture, imprisonment in an earthen pit intended for the most cruel criminals and even deprivation of food could not convince a stubborn martyr . Even on the contrary - torture only increased the popularity of old faith, and therefore the majority of the city's residents supported and professed the Old Believers, despite the fact that before their eyes the followers of this faith were burned, executed and starved .
