The stone staircase is a real symbol of Taganrog, a favorite vacation spot for city dwellers and city visitors . The staircase has been here for more than 100 years and at all times attracted people . The secret is simple, besides , that it itself is an interesting architectural object, the view that opens from its sites, truly fascinates . No wonder that they liked to meet the dawn, admire the ships on the roadstead or follow the descending to the city twilight many famous and great natives of Taganrog - A . P . Chekhov, N . F . Shcherbina, A . L . Vishnevsky .
The stone staircase is due to the fact of its existence to the rich Taganrog merchant and patron of Greek origin, Gerasim Fedorovich Depaldo. It was at his initiative and at his expense that one of the most noteworthy places of Taganrog was created nowadays.
The staircase was built according to Franz Boffo's project, by September 14, 1823 the project was already ready and handed over. At that time this magnificent structure had 13 sites, 142 steps, its width in the upper part was equal to 5, 42 m, at the bottom of 7, 12 m, and the length was impressive 113 m. A low barrier was established along the edges of the staircase, and the pedestrian part of it was laid out from the Sarmatian limestone.
Almost all who were lucky to visit the top terrace of the staircase, whether they were townspeople or guests of Taganrog, noted the magnificent view that opens from here.
By the way, there are also gallant pages of history on the staircase: during the Crimean War, on May 22, 1855, after Taganrog was fired by the enemy fleet, A British detachment of 100 men attempted to land and climb the Depalado staircase. The self-confidence of the Anglo-Saxons could have been envied if they had succeeded in avoiding a detachment of Cossacks under the command of the centurion Ermolov. The Cossacks issued "one-way tickets" to the British without any hard gunshots.
In the late 70s - early 80s, The 19th century staircase was planted. Its first full-fledged reconstruction began in 1934. According to the project it was planned to install about 30 plaster figures of the antiquity epoch. By May 1935 the plan was realized: The stone staircase became even more "green" than before, and, in fact, there appeared sculptures, Greek and Roman vases. And at its foot were squares with fountains.
In the 70s. The 20th century was another reconstruction. The next restoration of the Stone Staircase was carried out in 2006 and caused an ambiguous reaction of the townspeople. The fact is that the steps that were created from the Sarmatian stone were replaced with granite ones, which, according to many critics, destroyed the color of the stone staircase.
