Saint Blessed Pavel Taganrog (Pavel Pavlovich Stozhkov) was born on November 8, 1792 . in Chernigov province . He was named Paul in honor of St. Paul the confessor, and from the first years of his life he discovered the desire for salvation and righteous life . After reaching the age of 20, the young man received an inheritance from his father, who made up vast estates and several hundred serfs, it was a very solid state. . But since his soul was far from earthly worries, Paul let all his serfs to freedom .Of course, such an act was a great surprise to neighbors and friends of the family . After that Pavel, fulfilling his old dream, went on a journey to the holy places of Rus .
After settling in the city, Paul becomes known for his modest life, by attending all church services, fasting and praying earnestly, donating to the temples . God's followers have been drawn to the divine man . The Lord gave Paul the gift of healing and rumors about miraculous recoveries spread far beyond the city limits . To Taganrog with their troubles, sorrows and witches people from all over the province were drawn . During his life, the ascetic lived in different parts of the city, and spent the last few years in an apartment on Depaldovsky, now Turgenevsky Lane .In this small house the elder and met his death . Now this house is called the podvoryem of the Elder Paul or, as is customary among the people, the cell of St. Paul .
The room where St. Paul of Taganrog offered prayers was all in icons, candles and lamps were burning everywhere. The saint slept only on a hard bench, but instead of a pillow he put some clothes under his head. St. Paul led an ascetic life and to the same called his flock. Very many people came to him in this small cell, received spiritual or physical healing. To read it became even before his death, which followed in March 1879.
The long-awaited event happened in Taganrog in the last year of the twentieth century: on June 20, 1999, the canonization of Blessed Paul Taganrogsky and the transfer of his relics to the St. Nicholas Church took place.
