Until now, many ancient churches of Russian wooden architecture have survived. Unfortunately, not all of them are in good condition, although definitely all have great artistic value. At best, the abandoned churches are determined under the authority of a museum. Sometimes residents of nearby settlements take care of the temples. But, unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky.
The Church of St. John Chrysostom in Saunino was lucky, it is controlled by the Kargopol Historical and Architectural Museum. This is one of the best preserved tent wooden churches of the 17th century. It can be seen from the track itself: this is the only building on the endless northern field. But an even more spectacular view opens from the opposite side, from the village of Saunino.
The construction of the church is quite traditional: a rectangular basement and a pyramidal dome. To the base of the building is attached a small room - a refectory. A separately standing bell-tower of hexagonal form flashes next to it. The church reaches a height of almost 34 m.
Inside the building, too, there is something to admire. The main value of the temple is a painted iconostasis with images of archangels and evangelists. True, it is not fully preserved, but only partly. But the walls under the ceiling, where the heavens usually appear, depict twelve figures of saints in full human growth.
It's amazing that there is no special space inside the church. The height of the ceiling is only about 5 m. Question: where did the other three dozen meters of height go? In fact, designs of this type were invented to protect the internal decoration of churches from rain and snow.
