In the northern direction from the Palace Park in Gatchina is an amazing landscape park "Zverinets", occupying a territory of 340 hectares. The picturesque place began to settle even under Count Orlov - a connoisseur of hunting fun. "Zverinets" was created as a kind of reserve, in 1770 its borders were defined, roads, bridges and gates crowned entrances to the park were built.
Pavel I, who brought camels to the suburban residence, breathed new life into the outlandish park. With him, "Zverinets" found a regular lay-out, 30 000 lime trees were planted in the reserve. An amazing park was completed with a lifting bridge and an artificial flowing lake.
The ensemble developed under Alexander III, and in 1881 the park, which contained over 340 species of animals, was transferred to the "Jägermeister". After the revolution of 1917 the Zverinets in Gatchina became available for open visits, the magnificent park was seriously damaged during the Great Patriotic War.
