One of the most ancient cities of the Amazon, Pebas (or Pevas) was founded in 1735 by missionaries from the Old World. Situated 145 km downstream from Iquitos, Pebas is considered to be the ideal point for forays into the jungle: around the lake with giant lilies, piranhas and river dolphins. This is truly a lost place among the wild tropical forests: there are no banks or post offices, lawyers or cars, and the first landline phone was installed only in 1998.
Most of the city is a low-rise wooden house with thatched roofs, but there are Pebase and a real attraction - the house-museum of the painter Francisco Gripp, one of his paintings even served as a cover for the New York Times.

How to get there
Of course, the best way to get here is during the group excursions / trips around the Amazon. Extreme individuals should look for cargo boats or high-speed boats in Leticia, which ply past Pabas every day, except Monday (stop on request). Travel time is about 15 hours on a cargo barge and S20 for a ticket, on a boat - many times faster and more expensive (3, 5 hours and S170).
Pepas and the jungle
At the wharf of Pebas you can hire a boat with a guide for a whole day (from 10 USD), or simply put on rubber boots, go into the thicket (only half an hour separate the town from the real dense jungle). Near the town is the mouth of Palometa creek with a unique lake with black water where you can see rare exotic birds.
Find good guides and guides through the jungle at the Casa de la Loma on a hill that is on the outskirts of Pabas . There are also night walks, fishing trips to piranhas, and visiting nearby tribes.
Grippa Gallery
The artist creates his paintings from the typical materials for these places - tree bark and natural, created from improvised means, paint. Skip his house-museum in Pebas is simply impossible: a bright red roof is visible from almost anywhere in the city. By the way, here you can also stay for the night - double rooms are equipped on the top floor of the house.
