Add a review of the German Colony

The German colony (or German settlement) in Haifa is located below the gardens of the World Bahá'í Center, around Ben Gurion Boulevard. It was founded in 1868 by members of the Templer Society, who bought land outside the then Haifa specifically to establish a community here. An excellent view of the colony opens from the upper part of the Baha'i Gardens: it contrasts with the rest of the city's building with its tapered brick roofs.

The religious movement of the Templars broke away from the German Lutheran church, and its followers who arrived in Haifa were engaged in land processing and trade up to Second World War. After its completion and the formation of the State of Israel, they did not hide their sympathies for the Nazi regime, unequivocally proposed to leave the city and the country.

Ben Gurion's main street was turned into a wide promenade. Around there is a mass of cafes and restaurants, many of them quite pulling on the European first class

Now the German colony, which became a city quarter, has become a favorite place for recreation and walks for both city dwellers and visitors to Haifa. Here they are waiting for low stone buildings, cozy courtyards, citrus trees. Many original houses were restored in the late 20th century, and the main street of Ben-Gurion was turned into a wide promenade. Around there is a mass of cafes and restaurants, many of them quite pulling on the European first class.

In the German houses, a cellar was traditionally dug, which is not usually found in other residential buildings of Haifa. Today, these wine cellars often store wines and other supplies for restaurants. Look, for example, at the restaurant "Cancer Basar", and you will see the wine cellar through the glass floor.

Here, in the German settlement, is the Museum of the History of the City, which was founded in 2000. This is the historic building of the communal house of Templars, built in 1869 and became the first building built by a sect in the territory of the then Palestine. The building is still being restored and now temporary exhibits are placed in it, including paintings by contemporary artists
